  4. Photo #4. OCEAN PARK CAFE FIRE: The Ocean Park Cafe was located on the south-east corner of Stevenson Road (128th St.) and North Bluff Road. The original cafe and hardware were destroyed by fire, after which Paul Uren built this new cafe building. Owner of the Ocean Park Cafe, Wilbur (Wib) Hoover looks on as Fire Chief Aubrey Stevens directs Peter Allanson in the fire truck pulling the burning storage building away from the main cafe.
Back when all local firefighters were volunteers, Aubrey Stevens was chief. Sometimes the firefighters used unorthodox methods to get the job done. In June 1960, a call came in one night that there was a fire at the corner of 128th Street (Stevenson Road) and 16th Avenue (North Bluff). When the heavy tanker truck arrived, the fire had a head start as a small building next to the Ocean Park Cafe was engulfed in flames. As the flames started spreading to the roof of the cafe, Stevens never missed a beat; he ordered the firefighters to ready the building for a quick tow. The building was hitched to the heavy tanker truck and pulled from the restaurant by Peter Allanson at the wheel. The building was a complete loss, the cafe saved. This photograph was taken the next day showing Stevens inspecting the damage.
The photo is part of the Hastings collection at the Surrey Museum and Archives.
